In fiscal year 2006, the Jeffco Action Center again saw a huge demand
for services across the board. If there was ever a doubt whether there
were people in Jefferson County in need of assistance, take a look at
the numbers below.
Counselors distributed 20,340 baby care items and
1,234 household items to clients
All clients meet with an Emergency Services Counselor who evaluates their
needs and arranges for the immediate services we can provide. Clients
can make use of the Action Center's food bank, receive rent or utility
assistance, medical assistance, peruse the clothing bank, receive bus
tokens and get work readiness support. Counselors also help clients connect
with other community resources through referrals.
Food Bank distributed 51,615 five-day supplies of
food
The Action Center's Food Bank provides a nutritionally balanced 5-day
supply of groceries per person up to six times a year. The 30-day supply
of food clients can receive often helps bridge the gap while their application
is being considered for food stamps and other assistance.
Clothing Bank provided clients with 115,497 items
Our Clothing Bank provides garments for the whole family. Our Career Clothes
Closet provides interview and work clothing. Clients may choose their
own clothing from the display room.
Financial Assistance Programs distributed $198,691
Rent and utility assistance are available to help clients with a portion
of their bill. Clients must demonstrate how they will be able to pay the
next month's bill. Work Readiness support includes help in attaining essential
documentation for employment such as birth certificates, driver's and
professional licenses, as well as tools and work-related equipment. Bus
tokens may be provided for employment and transportation to medical services.
Medical Services provided $11,334
Medical assistance includes financial help with prescriptions,
glasses or dental requests, as well as providing case management services
and access to the Estes Street Community Clinic. The Estes Street Community
Clinic is a partnership between Metro Community Providers Network, Exempla/Lutheran
Hospital and JAC offering full family clinic services to Jeffco Action
Center clients who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless and
do not have health insurance. The Clinic resides within the Action Center's
newly remodeled facility and currently has approximately 3,000 patients.
Emergency Shelter: 291 clients with 5,845 client
nights
In operation since 1985, "JAC's Home" provides emergency housing
for men, women and children in single, couple or family units. The shelter,
rebuilt in 1997, provides private sleeping quarters, community dining
and recreational areas, and access to personal and medical services at
the Action Center and through Estes Street Community Clinic. Residents,
who must have one person in the family who is employable, may reside in
the shelter up to 30 days. Click here for
more information.
Santa Shop: 24,240 toys
Holiday Baskets: 2,394
The Action Center's Santa Shop operates year round preparing for two weeks
of toy distribution each December. Parents are given 10 points per child
and then are able to "shop" for toys and gifts for their children.
The Action Center also distributes holiday food baskets for both Thanksgiving
and Christmas. Click here for more information.
School Supplies provided to over 2,900 students
Each year, the Action Center helps Jefferson County students start off
a new school year on the right foot with brand new school supplies. This
year, donations came from churches, individuals, businesses and even some
teachers. Our annual school supply distribution helps our families stretch
their tight budgets when an extra demand threatens their ability to make
ends meet.
Tenant/Landlord Counseling: 2,734 new cases
The Tenant/Landlord Counseling program helps both renters and landlords
understand what their rights are under Colorado law. Counselors assist
renters and landlords with their questions, learn how to deal with issues
related to their housing situation and use the information to exercise
their rights. Clients can access the program by phone, through the Action
Center's website and by walk-in. Because of this broad ability to access
TLC, this program extends beyond Jefferson County. Click
here for more information.
J-HeLP distributed 3,993 meals
Unique to Jefferson County, the J-HeLP hot lunch program helps housebound
disabled residents under age 60 who do not qualify for Meals On Wheels.
The agency raises funds to purchase meals on behalf of 15 clients. The
Action Center also provides facilities and volunteers for the Jefferson
County Meals On Wheels program. Click here
for more information.
