It's Never to Early to Help Others
Rowan,8, and Simone,4, Woodbury show that it's never too early
to make a difference in the lives of others. The brother and sister
saw the news stories about the Action Center's food shortages and
decided to do something about it. Not only did they ask neighbors
to put out cans of food on their doorsteps for them to collect;
they also generated money from a lemonade stand, asked visitors
to their house for donations, and took money from their piggy banks
to donate! Says Director of Development Joe Haines, "Rowan
and Simone are born fundraisers with hearts of gold. It was a real
pleasure to accept their hard-earned donations!"

Kristin Woodbury couldn't be more proud of her children, Rowan and
Simone. Joe Haines cheerfully accepted their donation.

Caught up in the spirit of the season, a number of groups organized
food and toy drives or collected cash donations. With food donations
at a record low and the Action Center purchasing food in December
for the first time in its 39-year history, these efforts have been
greatly appreciated!
If you would like to organize your own drive, please contact Cathy
Hatfield, Director of Operations, at 303-237-7704 or send email

Gift Cards to the Action Center
On October 10, 2007, Safeway on Church Ranch Boulevard in Westminster
was awarded a check for $50,000 from the Colorado Lottery for selling
the state's very first Powerball Jackpot winning ticket. Safeway

Safeway presented the gift cards to the Action Center on December
5.
"The Jeffco Action Center reaches thousands of families in
Jefferson County who need food throughout the year. The winning

Thanksgiving Food Distribution
Feeds Over 1,400 Families
For the first time, the Action Center opened on the Saturday before
Thanksgiving in order to dedicate all resources to distributing
Thanksgiving food without disrupting regular services. In-Kind Donations
Services Coordinator John McElwain and Volunteer Coordinator Ann
Vorick worked with volunteers at the new warehouse to pre-bag all
of the non-perishable Thanksgiving food prior to the event. We gave
food to 1,100 households on Saturday and helped over 1,400 households
total, including Thanksgiving food given out on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful and amazing
day, thanks to the hard work by staff and volunteers! Happy Thanksgiving!

On November 10, the 9Cares Colorado Shares Food and Toy Drive collected
items from generous donors at the 9NEWS Studios and at locations
up and down the Front Range. Jeffco Action Center is one of the

Jeffco Action Center Benefits From Support of Interns
The Emergency Services department also got a huge boost with the
addition of several new interns. After volunteering in the Food
Bank for six months, Debbie Kinning, a 20-year Colorado native,
applied for an internship in Jeffco Action Center's Emergency Services
Department. Debbie will graduate summa cum laude in December with
a Human Services degree from Metropolitan State College. She hopes
to continue working as a volunteer with Jeffco Action Center.
Arlene McMillen moved to Colorado four years ago. She has always
helped others and will graduate in December with an undergraduate
degree in Human Services/Counseling and Mental Health from Metro
State. She hopes to continue working with those in need of emergency
services.
Elyse Rapp moved to Lakewood from her home state of Michigan. She
received her undergraduate degree in Psychology and has chosen to
pursue her Master's of Social Work (M.S.W) degree at the University
of Denver. Elyse chose Jeffco Action Center as her first year field
placement because it seems like a great place to get a broad overview
of work in human services.
After months of serving as a much-valued volunteer at the Action
Center, Nadine Kerstetter agreed to come on as the new communications
intern. She is currently a junior at the Women's College at the
University of Denver. Nadine has been working closely with Executive
Director Mag Strittmatter, writing press releases and stories for
the Action Center Newsletter. She has also been successful pitching
stories to the media about Action Center activities. Nadine hopes
to someday be a public relations practitioner for other nonprofits.

Clay Smaine Joins Action Center Staff
Clients waiting in the lobby for services can get a head start
on the lengthy Food Stamps application process with the help of
new Food Stamp Outreach Coordinator, Clay Smaine. The position is
funded by the USDA and is intended to help clients understand the
benefits of the program and determine whether they qualify. Clay
will help the clients fill out and submit any necessary paperwork
for processing. He will also be doing outreach, visiting area churches,
motels and other locations to find potential Food Stamps applicants.
Clay brings an interesting background to the position. He is a
skilled carpenter and spent several years serving as a Peace Corps
volunteer in Paraguay. Clay's fluency in Spanish is vital to his
ability to work with the Latino population. He plans to take the
hands on experience he gains at the Action Center with him when
he returns to South America in the future.

Director of Development Joe
Haines Throws Down the Gauntlet
Visitors to the Action Center will hopefully see a leaner crew
in the coming months. Director of Development Joe Haines has issued
a challenge to the rest of the Action Center staff -- he will donate
$10 to the Action Center for every pound they lose by June 30! In
turn, each staff member accepting the challenge must agree to donate
an amount of their choosing for each pound Joe loses. Joe
has capped his donation at $2,000 for a collective 200 pounds! So
far 6 staff members, Board President Allyson Gottsman, and several
other Board members have signed up.
Joe has opened his challenge to any Jeffco Action Center friend
or supporter so if you need some help getting fit for summer, stop
by for a weigh-in. Better yet, start a challenge of your own at
your company or organization (with the Action Center the beneficiary,
of course!).
if you have questions or would like to answer Joe's challenge,

Office Food Drive Brings in Record Numbers of Food
The 15th annual NALC National Food Drive, the largest one-day food
drive in the nation, took place on Saturday, May 12. Letter carriers
collected non-perishable donations as they delivered mail along
their postal routes. The food was collected in over 10,000 communities
by nearly 1,500 local branches of the postal union, along with rural
carriers and other volunteers. Donations were delivered to food
banks, including the Jeffco Action Center, pantries and shelters
that serve the area where the donations were collected.
This year, the Action Center received nearly 38,000 pounds of food
from the drive, far exceeding the 21,000 pounds from the previous
year. Not only did local letter carriers collect food along their
routes, they helped deliver and unload all that was collected. Volunteer
Coordinator Ann Vorick and In-Kind Donations Services Coordinator
John McElwain, managed groups of volunteers from organizations including
the Boy Scouts and the LDS Church, who unloaded and sorted the food.
NALC President William H. Young noted that the upcoming summer
months "are a particularly critical time for millions of children
whose school lunch programs are suspended until fall and their families
must find alternate sources of nutrition." Thanks to the generosity
of the Lakewood residents, and hard work of the NALC and Action
Center volunteers, we'll be in better position to prevent families
from struggling this summer.

New Development Staff
at the Action Center
The development department has been invigorated with the addition
of two new staff members -- Joe Haines as the new Director of Development
and Adele Najjar as the new Development Coordinator.
Joe Haines isn't entirely new to the Action Center. Back in 2004,
Joe was the manager at the Action Center's shelter, where he spent
time getting to know the in's and out's of the organization. While
he was an excellent Shelter Manager, Joe is even better suited to
work in his new position, which he started in February. Joe has
over 15 years of experience working in the nonprofit field. He has
worked with youth, the homeless, developmentally disabled adults
and feral cats! He is looking forward to diving into the upcoming
Beautiful Junk Sale and Breakfast fundraiser in May. Joe loves giving
tours of the Action Center so give him a call to sign up for the
next tour!
Adele Najjar is the new Development Coordinator and brings a wealth
of fundraising experience with her from her work at S.O. S. Kinderdoff.
She spent her time there working with potential sponsors, managing
the donor database, and raising money for the organization -- skills
she'll definitely put to use at the Action Center! She will be working
with Joe on special events, donor cultivation, and database management.
Joe Haines can be reached at 303-237-7704, ext. 204 or by email

Action Center Gets Additional Accounting Help
With all the expansion we've seen over the last few years, the
Action Center needed some additional help tracking all the finances.
Over the years, the Action Center enlisted the help of Gloria Steinmetz,
an accountant with her own business, who came in one day a week
and helped ensure that our record-keeping was accurate. Gloria certainly
had a hand in the Action Center achieving Charity Navigator's highest
4-star rating for sound fiscal management (see below).
But with the recent rapid growth of the organization, we realized
we needed more help. Unfortunately, Gloria's commitments to her
other clients didn't allow for her to devote more time so she is
handing over the reins to Elaine Rule.
Elaine, a native of Florida, has had her own accounting service
for 25 years. For the last 3 years, she was the Assistant Director
of Evergreen Christian Outreach, often referring clients to the
Action Center for services. Elaine is excited to help the Action
Center continue to achieve a high level of financial integrity and
to be a part of such a vital organization serving the Jefferson
County community.

Action Center Gets New Technology Support
The Action Center ended a long search for the perfect IT Coordinator
when we found Dan Marks. With over 20 combined years of experience
in providing software support, diagnosing system problems, maintenance,
and integration of hardware, Dan has already proven himself invaluable.
Over the last 4 years, Dan has been providing support for clients
and additional contract work through TAC Worldwide. Prior to that,
he developed extensive field skills working for a local Internet
service provider. His experience as lead technician on large projects
will be put to good use at the Action Center. "I'm looking
forward to helping the Action Center run more efficiently through
the use of new technologies," says Dan. The IT Coordinator
position was made possible by the generosity of the Stevinson Group.

Beautiful Junk Sale Continues to Set Fundraising
Records
This spring's Beautiful Junk sale set another fundraising record,
generating more than $26,000 for the Action Center and its programs,
a 44 percent increase over the previous sale! This was the second
sale held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, a move made to accommodate
both the growing number of items for sale and number of shoppers.
Collectors and bargain hunters came out in droves on both Friday,
March 24 and Saturday, March 25. Shoppers browsed through thousands
of items looking for bargains and were tempted by tasty lunch and
snacks available for purchase from Church Women United.
Lead sale volunteers Lisa Markley, Henry Weibler and Marty Simmonds
helped coordinate the efforts of hundreds of volunteers throughout
the year in order to get ready for the sale. Special thanks to all
of our volunteers, especially the groups from Colorado Christian
University staff from Business Affairs Organization, Golden K Foothills
Kiwanis, Applewood Kiwanis, Golden High School Interact Club, Pomona
High School National Honor Society, and Boy Scouts Troop #200.
If you missed out, mark your calendar for the fall sale, scheduled
for October 20 and 21. For more information, call 303-237-7704 or

holiday food to over 1,000 households and we saw an average of 162
clients per day, with a new record of 225 households helped on December
21. We distributed close to 2 tons of food every day, equivalent
to 500 bags of groceries! There's no question that our services

We will surely miss her, but we're happy that Nancy is now free
to pursue her other interests. Thank you and good luck, Nancy!

9Cares Colorado Shares is a Tremendous Success!!!
Thousands of people responded to the call for food, clothing, toys and
personal care items during the recent 9Cares Colorado Shares event held
Saturday November 15th at ten locations across the metro area. Jeffco
Action Center staff and volunteers collected food at the Colorado Mills
location this year.
JAC will receive a portion of the total food collected that day. This
food will help to stock the shelves between now and Christmas. However,
given that we distribute over one ton of food everyday, the food may only
last into early December. Your food donations are greatly appreciated.
